This is an incredibly important and eternal truth when it comes to the Lord Jesus saving us from our sins.
WHAT’S THE DIFFERENCE?
The difference between “worthy” and “worth” is more than just a letter at the end.
The idea of being worthy implies having merited some sort of favor or having deserved a specific positive outcome.
The idea of worth, on the other hand, is the amount of value that is placed upon the object in question and may or may not have anything to do with it being worthy.
BIBLICAL EXAMPLES INCLUDE
In Genesis 32:10, Jacob admitted to the LORD, “I am not worthy of the least of all the deeds of steadfast love and all the faithfulness that You have shown….”
In Matthew 3:11, comparing Himself with Jesus, John the Baptist stated, “I am not worthy.”
In Luke 15:19, the prodigal son in the story Jesus told about the wayward boy who had cursed his father, abandoned his family, and ran away to indulge in wickedness, was now at the end of his rope and, in a spirit of repentance, repeated over and over again, “I am no longer worthy to be called your son.”
WHAT’S THE POINT?
The point is clear: none of us are worthy of the love and affection, goodness and grace, or the mercy and longsuffering that the LORD our God continues to lavish upon our lives. There is not one person since the creation of the world [apart from the LORD Jesus] who has perfectly lived according to and fulfilled the Law of God. On the contrary, Bible verses abound regarding our total depravity, spiritual dissidence, and merited destruction as a result of our rebellion against God.
BUT HERE’S WHAT CRAZY – THE GOSPEL!
You may not be worthy – in fact, you’re definitely not – but you are worth it! Worth what? Well, if there is any one thing you take away from this blog, let it be this: You did nothing to deserve Jesus taking your place and dying on the Cross for your sins, you are not worthy, but the fact that He did that for you means that you are worth the cost!
God did not look at you or anyone else and think, “Wow! They are such a good person and positive example in this evil world! I should save them!” God did not do that! But God did look at you and think, “I love them so much and, though they deserve to die for their sins, there is nothing in Me that desires for them to suffer that judgment. Therefore, I will send My Son to take their judgment upon Himself, to pay their price, and to rescue them from death!” That is what God thought when He looked in your direction.
THEREFORE…
…you are not worthy, none of us are, but you are worth it! To the LORD our God, you are precious and worth your weight in fine gold (Lamentations 4:2). So, don’t ever let anyone, even yourself, tell you anything different. God loves you and has made every sacrifice possible investing in your life in order to receive you as a reward for Himself! That is how much He thinks about you, cares about you, is devoted to you, and values and treasures you.
You are not worthy…but you are worth it! And if there’s anything Jesus proved on the Cross…that was it.
