Imagine having the desire, even one that is desperate, to speak directly with the president of the United States! What is quickly realized is that one’s desire simply does not matter and ultimately does no good. Just like any other Hollywood star, political figure, or member of the royal family, the president of the United States is off limits. It seems it would take an alien invasion in which, for whatever reason, the extraterrestrials chose you as their middle-man through whom they would communicate before even the suggestion of receiving an audience with the president. Thus, any such desire will most likely never come to fruition.
This is just the way things are and there is no sign of change in sight. If anything, the government will only further restrict public and private access even against people who are higher up, positionally speaking. After all, before Lincoln’s assassination, public access to presidents was relatively simpler whereas now it is not only extremely complex but almost entirely impossible.
BUT GOD IS DIFFERENT!
Unlike any of the popular, prominent, and prestigious members of society, the God of the universe has not chosen to restrict access but to open the door wide open! If this truth was not so taken for granted, it would be [and truly is] absolutely extraordinary! Why? Because God is just not open to some elite class of church leader or Christian, but the LORD who made all things is fully and freely accessible to anyone and everyone, anywhere and everywhere, and desires to listen and discuss any subject whatsoever. He has provided a direct line of communication to all people who choose to seek Him!
Anywhere.
Anyone.
Anytime.
Any subject.
OLD TESTAMENT CONNECTION WITH ROMANS 5:2
Romans 5:2 famously states, “Through Him [Christ] we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.” Full, unlimited, and free access to the God who made all things as a result of what Christ has done on our behalf. This is different than the increasing restrictions put in place by world leaders as God has done the exact opposite by removing and casting away those restrictions that used to be present in the ancient world. There is now no longer a need to travel to any one specific location for worship (John 4:21-24) nor is anyone required to go through a priest, pope, or any one individual to get to God because Christ is our Mediator (1 Timothy 2:5).
The Old Testament picture that points forward to and brings this truth to life is found in Esther 5:2 which says, “And when the king saw Queen Esther standing in the court, she won favor in his sight, and he held out to Esther the golden scepter that was in his hand. Then Esther approached and touched the tip of the scepter.” Now, this may not seem at first glance to be of any significance, but barging in on the king like Esther did, even though she was Queen, could have resulted in her public disgrace, permanent banishment, or even personal execution. However, it says that when the king saw her he raised his scepter toward her which gave Queen Esther full, unlimited, and free access to the king on his throne. He gave her his undivided attention as she came forward to present her request.
CONCLUSION
The picture of Esther then is the demonstrated reality of Romans 5:2 in that all believers in Jesus have been granted the LORD God’s undivided and undistracted attention. It is as if, when reading Romans 5:2, Esther 5:2 has been divinely designed to stick out to each and every Christian as God our King holds His golden scepter in our direction so that we may come and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (Hebrews 4:14-16). James 4:8 encourages every believer by saying, “Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you.”
All of this is possible because of the work Jesus accomplished on our behalf 2,000 years ago when He died and rose again. Full, unlimited, and free access to God. Wow! Let us never take this for granted or not miss out on such a wonderful gift by our incredible Savior!
